Universal Identifier for Cataloged Items.

OK, here is a question for those with more library experience than I.

I have a large collection (2000?) of reprints, paper documents that are
tracked in EndNote. Currently I just generate an numeric code, and generate
a barcode label. The label is stuck on the paper, it is filed, and EndNote
is used to search for documents and tell me the filing location (which is
numerically sequential). This works fairly well, but I am wondering if
there is a recognized international standard for generating identifiers for
documents that would have meaning outside my system.

I know there are many standards that are used by a subset of users and
counties, but I have documents from around the world, and was hoping some
group had herded the cats and managed to develop a wide standard.
